AI for roommates: chores, rent, guests and the passive-aggressive note

Updated September 2026 · 5 min read

Nobody wants to be the roommate who sends a paragraph about the oat milk. But sometimes the rent split really is uneven, or someone's partner has practically moved in. Put everyone in one chat with the same AI and work through the numbers before the group text gets ugly. without sounding like the difficult one. That's exactly the gap a neutral AI in a shared chat fills: it says the thing nobody wants to be the one to say.

Who should pay more for the bigger room?

Unequal rooms, one person's partner staying over four nights a week, the Wi-Fi nobody agreed to upgrade. Put the numbers in a shared room and ask for a fair split with reasons. Unequal bedrooms, a partner staying over four nights a week, the Wi-Fi upgrade nobody approved. Put the numbers in a shared chat and ask the AI to suggest a split with reasons. Then decide together what makes sense. The AI doesn't know your lease or what you agreed to unless you tell it. and the semi-permanent guest chips in for utilities, and because it said it, nobody had to.

Chores without the chart

If your chore chart is already being ignored, ask the AI to suggest a rotation based on what each person is willing to do. Instead, ask the room to propose a rotation from what each person hates least, then revisit it in the thread when it stops working. The record is right there, so "I did it last week" is checkable.

The disputes

Who finished the oat milk, whether 11 p.m. is a reasonable time to vacuum, whether a guest who's stayed nine days has overstayed their welcome: these are Settle It material. Let everyone explain their side, get the Judge's take, and argue with the verdict if you need to. The verdict format ("Ruling / Sentence") is half the fun.

When the group text isn't helping

A group text can turn into three people repeating themselves. In SharedChat, everyone can explain their side to the same AI. The Judge waits for both sides before ruling. It might still get things wrong, but at least everyone can question the same answer.

Prompt that works: "Three of us, rent $2,400. Room A is 180 sq ft with a bathroom, B is 150, C is 120. One partner stays over ~4 nights a week. Propose a fair split for rent and utilities and explain it."
