How to use AI to settle an argument with someone

Updated September 2026 · 5 min read

Search for an AI to settle an argument and you'll find apps like SettleItGPT, ArgueResolver, and Mendus. Some let people submit their sides and receive a verdict. That works for a quick dispute, but what if one person needs to respond to something the other said?

The "one phone" problem

Take SettleItGPT. Two people enter their sides on the same device, pick a judge character, and get a verdict. Fine for a quick argument. But without follow-up questions or a chance to challenge the other person's account, it feels to me like a coin flip with a paragraph attached. I'd rather let both people make their case.

Some arguments need more than two statements. Someone remembers a missing detail, challenges an assumption, or asks what the other person meant. A shared conversation leaves room for those questions.

What to look for in an AI referee

  1. Both people, live. Not two statements. A conversation the AI can ask questions in.
  2. A rule that it must hear both sides. Otherwise it's just a confident opinion on one story.
  3. A ruling you can read. Not "it's complicated." A clear call, with reasons, and something to do next.
  4. The sense to sit some things out. Custody, medical questions, anything involving someone's safety. A fair referee says "not mine to call" and points somewhere real.

How to do it in SharedChat

Start a Settle It room and invite the other person by link or text. State your case; they state theirs. The Judge asks for the other side if only one is in, then rules, in a fixed format everyone can read the same way: Verdict, Ruling, Sentence. If you want to skip the small talk, there's a "Get the Verdict" button once both sides are on the record.

A tip that works: agree on the question before you argue it. "Should we spend the $2k on the trip or the card?" gets a useful ruling. "Why are you always like this?" gets a follow-up question, on purpose.

When not to use an AI referee

If the disagreement involves abuse, safety, or a legal decision, don't use an AI verdict to settle it. SharedChat has tested its rooms with these scenarios and instructs them to direct custody questions to an attorney and safety concerns toward appropriate support. AI can still miss important warning signs.

For a bar bet, a quick verdict might be enough. For an argument you keep having, let the other person make their case too. Start a Settle It room.
